Gotey and Rihanna were the most tagged artists on music discovery app Shazam in 2012.

The service has also revealed that 130 songs received more than one million tags in the worldwide charts – three times that of 2011 figures.

Island/Communion act Gotye, topped tagged track lists for the US, UK and the rest of the world for his hit Somebody That I Used To Know, which clocked up a whopping 14.9m tags through the service. Other artists in the Top 3 of this category across territories include fun., David Guetta, Ellie Goulding and Alex Clare.

Spotify recently revealed that David Guetta and Rihanna were the most-streamed artists of 2012 on its platform.

With regards to tags driven by television, Alex Clare’s Too Close was a key player this year as the track’s feature in the Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 television campaign drove discovery, bringing in thousands of hits a day.

Will Mills, Shazam’s director of Music and Content said: “Information – particularly data about the music that people are tagging because they like it find it interesting – is now more important than ever before. The tagging data that Shazam provides labels helps them to understand their target audience so that they can more effectively decide where to put their marketing efforts.
“Up to 85% of the songs that get to number one Shazam’s Tag Charts go on to break nationally, making it one of the most accurate predictive measures for success and a key driver for Shazam of more than $300 million in digital music sales through our partners.”
