Twitter’s new music discovery platform Twitter #Music has been official unveiled.
Users will be able to both discover music that is trending on the social network via the new platform as well as play tracks within the app with the tap of a button. That’s thanks to Twitter’s integration of music services like Rdio, Spotify and iTunes.
Rdio and Spotify users can log in with their accounts to hear full tracks while listening courtesy of iTunes only provides a preview.
The platform will be made available today as a separate app for iPhone. It will launch in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Over time, the service will be brought to Android as well as more countries.
The new service will help Twitter users discover music using four tabs: a ‘Popular’ page will show new music trending across Twitter, an ‘Emerging tab’ apparently showing “hidden talent found in tweets”.
Users will be able to follow artists on the service and a ‘Suggested’ tab will recommend acts based on those users already track.
A ‘#NowPlaying’ tab shows songs that friends are listening or tweeting about.
Each of the above pages features a grid of artists and songs that can be played from the app.
A post on the Twitter blog today said, “Today, we're releasing Twitter #music, a new service that will change the way people find music, based on Twitter.
“It uses Twitter activity, including Tweets and engagement, to detect and surface the most popular tracks and emerging artists. It also brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity front and center: go to their profiles to see which music artists they follow and listen to songs by those artists. And, of course, you can tweet songs right from the app.”
Twitter recently confirmed the acquisition of We Are Hunted, a start-up which tracks the most popular songs across the internet, which is now being used to power Twitter #Music.
