The Missionary Church of Kopimism was founded by Philosophy student Isak Gerson in 2010 and to aid getting the beliefs accepted, approached the authorities to become officially accepted as a religion. After initially being rejected twice, file-sharing is now recognised with believers dubbed 'Kopimists'.

'Kopimi' is derived from 'copy me'. Followers believe that "communication is sacred." and CRTL+C and CTRL+V are considered sacred symbols
