Kobalt's AWAL streaming label launches mobile app for artists

AWAL, Kobalt’s streaming label for independent artists, has launched a new app designed to give musicians detailed, instant insights into their streaming data.

The app is available from today (March 28) to all AWAL members for download on iOS and Android devices.

Willard Ahdritz, founder and CEO of Kobalt said: “What’s true today is that the opportunity for independent artists to make a living off streaming is growing. We want to speed that up. The first step is helping independent artists de-mystify their streaming data. Today’s artists need to understand the signals that drive future success and be able to act quickly. The AWAL App puts the power of data into the hands of independent artists to help them build a sustainable career from streaming.”

Spotify’s global head of creator services, Troy Carter, added: “AWAL helps independent artists make sense of the incredible amounts of streaming data around their music and fans. This is the type of innovative thinking that will shape the future of the music industry."

The app is powered by the company’s KORE technology and is the first data and insights mobile offering from AWAL.

Its principal features include access to members’ Apple Music and Spotify streaming data, which are presented side by side for easy comparison. Users can view breakdowns of streams, listeners, audience demographics and playlist activity.

Artists will also be able to access tailored insights on streaming sources, including playlists or recommendations that are driving engagement and listening trends relating to gender, age and time. Push notifications will alert users when songs are added to new playlists, and revenue from all sources will be transparently displayed.

A select group of artist and label clients have been trialling the app this year. Ray Blk, winner of the BBC’s Sound Of 2017 poll, said: "As an independent artist it’s so important to me to understand who and where my fans are and what songs they're feeling so I can connect better with them. The app helps me see where best to perform and what songs to perform. I get to see some dope facts on the AWAL App, like when I saw my listeners are about 50/50 male/female, which is amazing because I never thought men would like the empowering female songs I make."

Jimmy Mikaoui, MD, Marathon Artists, commented: “The AWAL App gives me access to data quickly and easily, and is enormously helpful in meetings and on the go so that we never miss an opportunity or have to wait to pass on important information. Up until now we had to aggregate many sources and tools to be able to know where our streams are coming from, what triggered them and anticipate how much income such activity was likely to generate.”

AWAL was founded in 2004 and counts more than 20,000 global artists and labels among its partners. It offers data insights, international support, a curated roster and deals that allow artists to keep 100% of their rights, with AWAL taking a share of revenue. It also affords potential access to Kobalt’s other services, including publishing, recordings and neighbouring rights.
