Communications Officer, MPA Group of Companies

Status: Full-time
Salary: £23 - £25K dependent on experience
Location: Kings Cross, London

To work alongside the Chief Executive and General Manager

You will be the gateway for communications about the MPA Group of Companies comprising MPA, MCPS, IMPEL and PMLL, and their work to their members, industry stakeholders, the press and the general public. Responsibilities will include;

Member Communications

• Compile, edit and disseminate monthly email newsletters to members of each respective company.
• Compile, edit and send ‘stop press’ announcements to members and corporate associate members and where necessary to non-members and press via other industry bodies.
• To develop and manage a social media and digital communications strategy for all of the MPA Group of Companies.
• Set up and manage Wiki pages for MPA, MCPS, IMPEL and PMLL
• Advertise, promote and publicise all MPA Group Company events to members including training courses, specialist seminars and socials.
• Create promotional materials to attract new members to the MPA Group of Companies.
• Explain the business of music publishing.
• Update membership packs (in conjunction with Member Services team).
• Devise, process, analyse and report on ad hoc MPA member surveys.

External communications

• Compile, edit and disseminate monthly email newsletters to non-members.
• Advertise all MPA training courses and events to non-members via other industry bodies.
• Provide ways for the general public to access information on the business of music publishing (eg. videos on the MPA Group of companies respective websites, YouTube channel etc).
• Ensure content about music publishing and the MPA businesses is accurate on other sites (eg. other trade bodies).
• Assist the Head of Member Services & Events as required with coordinating the MPA’s presence and involvement at external events including, but not limited to, Midem, the Great
Escape and Liverpool Sound City.

Press

• To act as a first port of call for enquiries from the national, regional and trade press, liaising with the MPA Group companies’ external PR consultant, General Manager and Chief Executive to provide an appropriate response.
• To assist the PR consultant in the preparation of press releases and other external communications.
• To assist the PR consultant in the writing of speeches and preparing quotes for the Chief Executive, Board or other spokespersons.
• Keep mailing list of press contacts up to date.
• Maintain an archive of press cuttings, circulating copies of press coverage internally, to the Board or externally as appropriate.
• Upload press cuttings and press releases to the MPA website.
• Circulate press releases to the appropriate media contacts under instruction from the PR consultant.

Websites and Social Media

• Write and generate articles for the MPA Group of Companies’ respective websites and social media pages -
• Create digital video content, advertising banners and other promotional materials for the websites, Twitter channel and Facebook page
• Overall responsibility of the corporate and news content of the websites, Twitter channel and Facebook page
• Drive development of the websites to ensure they are always up to date and fit for purpose.
Proactively staying abreast of social media trends, web developments and emerging technology to determine how and where the MPA Group of Companies can further its online presence
Industry Liaison
• Be lead contact with UK Music on all comms related issues.
• Represent the MPA on the UK Music Comms Group if requested.
• Instigate and maintain regular liaison with PRS for Music Comms team.
• Represent the MPA at external industry meetings and events as required
• Proactively engage with other music and creative industries trade associations.

Other

• Manage the MPA ‘info’ box of email enquiries & respond to all telephone enquiries with assistance from Intern as appropriate
• Keep abreast of technological and industry developments and advise colleagues accordingly by way of daily ‘For Everyone’s Info’ emails
• Provide support to the Chief Executive, General Manager and other staff as necessary in this small and busy office and provide cover during periods of absenteeism
• Attend staff meetings and others meetings and events as required

 

Skills required: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. IT literate, proficient with Microsoft Office, familiar with software packages such as Adobe (Photoshop, In Design), CMS and email newsletter software such as Mailchimp. Strong attention to detail and the ability to distil complex topics into accessible engaging prose. A natural networker with the ability to build strong and effective relationships in order to convey the MPA Group of Companies vision. Fluent inall areas of social media.

Personal Qualities: Self motivated, positive, friendly team player with a pro-active creative and solutions orientated approach. Ability to see opportunities beyond immediate tasks. An interest and awareness in music and in developing technologies. Organised and able to deliver a project within time constraints and budget.

Experience: This position would suit a second jobber with a minimum two years relevant experience in a communications, PR or marketing role who has some experience of working with press. Previous work within a member or non-profit organisation would be advantageous, as would some music industry exposure. Prior experience of writing features, digital communications and contributing to press releases is essential. The right individual will have a keen interest and understanding of the issues, developments and current affairs facing the music industry.
