DELO vs. Yak is made up of London-born John De Lord (aka Delo) and Sheffield-born John Randall (aka Yak) who have teamed up on new EP “Coaction” out now via the inimitable Tessier-Ashpool Recordings.
In the span of a single year, Delo has seen support from the likes of Dusk & Blackdown, Addison Groove and Swamp81, and opened for the likes of Dillinja and Zinc. Synchronously, Yak’s tunes have graced the sets of Dusk & Blackdown and Loefah as well, plus those of Hodge, Paleman, Plastician, Lamont and Troy Gunner (to name a few), and he’s shared the booth with the likes of Call Super, Walton, Alex Coulton, Palms Trax, Ejeca and Dark Sky. This well-earned good will surrounding the two Johns at the moment is enheartening; the fitting buzz almost palpable – both indicative of the continued health and recursive growth of the wellspring that is “the UK sound”.
We are able to premiere “Anju”, the new track byYak and it’s an original take on liquid beats, an instrumental genre-splicing of two-step and garage. The distinctive opening beats interplay beautifully with harmonious rhodes keyboard and glitchy synth effects. Yak's sudden bassline infuses the track with more traditional funk and soul elements, leaving plenty of space for the keys to breathe. Barely noticeable vocal samples give the human touch to the clinical, cut-up rhythm, all fusing together in a rare track that's at home both on headphones and in the club.
