Hidden Masters makes Pledge with first release

A contemporary music curation service launched by industry veteran Neil Storey has issued its first commercial release in a tie-up with PledgeMusic.

Hidden Masters, which was set up by one-time EMI, Island Records and BMG PR executive Storey in 2008, has rolled out a six-CD anthology of Jess Roden, recently named by Uncut magazine alongside Joe Cocker, Steve Winwood, Paul Rodgers, Rod Stewart and Jack Bruce as one of the great British R 'n' B voices.

The Jess Roden Anthology comprises 94 tracks and is available to order exclusively from PledgeMusic. The first edition will be limited to just 950 hand-numbered copies and available in a 12-inch hard-book format. It includes a first interveiw with Roden, who is now retired from active music making, in 30 years.

Storey, who also founded Partridge & Storey with the late Rob Partridge, said: “The beauty of PledgeMusic’s methodology and one of the key reasons we wanted to work with them is that we are able to offer much more than just a bonus CD. We’re doing that within this first edition anyway but theirs is the only platform that allows us to offer packages that not only enhance the music but also have real and lasting value to the fans and collectors alike. We set out to create not just a career-defining edition for Jess but to marry his music to exemplary packaging. And, by working with the guys at PledgeMusic, we’re now able to expand on that and offer the fans something really special.”

Storey worked with Partridge at Island Records where Roden was on the roster.

Roden added: “I suppose like many musicians who are no longer active, I’ve long wondered just what might have survived within the archives. Me and my bands recorded so much back in the day but one also hears these terrible tales of multi-tracks being thrown out and ending up in skips. Without Neil Storey’s Sherlock Holmes-like tenacity, none of this material would have been tracked down and would probably have been left on the shelf to gather even more dust. Neil’s unearthed stuff I couldn’t recall writing let alone recording and, I have to say I’m really rather glad he has.”

PledgeMusic managing director Malcolm Dunbar said: “Hidden Masters is that rare thing in today’s music industry: a high quality labour of love that puts a passion for music at the centre of it’s whole philosophy. We are delighted to be working with Neil Storey and Jess Roden on this first release from Hidden Masters and hope to play a part in introducing a wide audience to this magnificent project.”
