Universal’s £1.2bn acquisition of EMI buyout was finally approved last week, but only after the EC ordered Universal to sell hefty divestments.
The Parlophone label has been put up for sell as well as EMI’s Pink Floyd and David Bowie catalogues - plus EMI’s 50% stake in the Now! Compilation series.
The buyout has split the independent label community down the middle, with some saying Universal’s ability to dominate and control the market has now reached “unacceptable levels”. However, others see the divestments and consolidation process as more opportunities for the indie sector.
