Songwriter Bill Martin awarded MBE

Three-time Ivor Novello winner Bill Martin has told Music Week of his “great honour” at being awarded an MBE.

Martin was the first British songwriter to write a European Song Contest winner for the UK with Puppet On A String, performed by Sandie Shaw in 1967.

Other hits penned by Martin include the England World Cup Squad’s Back Home (1970) and Cliff Richard’s Congratulations (1968). All three tracks were created as part of Martin’s fruitful songwriting partnership with Phil Coulter.
