X Factor's Arthur hits million sales, confirms Syco signing

James Arthur has broken through 1 million UK sales of debut single Impossible, and confirmed that he has signed to Simon Cowell's Syco.

The track surpassed seven figures domestically on Wednesday, making Arthur only the fourth X Factor UK winner to achieve more than 1 million sales for a debut single.

The programme's 2005 winner Shayne Ward managed it with That's My Goal as did 2008 champ Alexandra Burke with Hallelujah and Matt Cardle with his 2010-winning release When We Collide.

Leona Lewis, who won the show in 2006, has achieved 1 million sales for her single Bleeding Love in the UK, but not with her winning track A Moment Like This, which has sold around 900,000 copies to date.

Impossible's high sales are a marked improvement on what 2011 X Factor winners' Little Mix's introductory single Cannonball sold, having shifted around 468,000 copies in total by the end of last week.

"I am thrilled to be part of the Syco family, working with Simon and his team is exactly where I want to be. I can't wait to get into the studio to start work on my record,"  said Arthur.
