Warner/Chappell boss hails Skepta Mercury win

Warner/Chappell CEO Jon Platt has paid tribute to Skepta after his Hyundai Mercury Prize triumph.

The grime artist’s album Konnichiwa won at the 2016 British/Irish album of the year ceremony on Thursday night, seeing off the likes of David Bowie, Radiohead and The 1975. Skepta is famously independent when it comes to releasing records, but is signed to Warner/Chappell in the UK for publishing.

"Skepta’s Konnichiwa is a landmark work that beautifully reflects the vibrant, diverse and inventive UK music scene in 2016,” Platt told Music Week. “Amber Davis—our UK creative director—and the Warner/Chappell UK staff have been tireless champions of Skepta’s songwriting, and I speak for the entire team when I say that his win is much-deserved. Congratulations!"

Konnichiwa has sold 85,393 copies to date, according to the Official Charts Company.
