Universal secures Hannah Montana star for Europe
13:03 | Thursday August 7, 2008
Universal Music Group has followed its European licensing deal for Hollywood Records’ Jonas Brothers by securing a tie-up with the Disney-owned label’s US chart-topping Miley Cyrus album.
The major will release Hannah Montana star Cyrus’s album Breakout, which last week debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, across Europe next month. In the UK it will be issued by Polydor on September 1, preceded by the single See You Again on August 25.
The deal, announced by Universal Music Group International executive vice president Max Hole, further strengthens the links between Universal and Disney, which has a broader deal with EMI for Disney releases internationally.
However, Universal put out the Jonas Brothers’ self-titled album in Europe, rather tahn EMI, while in June it was announced the major had signed an international licensing agreement for the Asian market, excluding Japan.
Hole says, “Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana is already a TV and music superstar around the world; her solo debut is off to a fantastic start in the US and we are thrilled to be working with Disney to build her solo recording career in Europe.”
Disney Music Group chairman, Bob Cavallo adds, “We are delighted to further expand our relationship with Universal with Miley Cyrus. The phenomenon of Hannah Montana has been a fantastic platform to launch Miley’s music career. Her ability to craft songs that touch both her fans and her fans’ parents is a gift, which will enable her to have a long and successful career.”
