Apple Q1 revenues hit $46.3bn - $41bn more than digital music generated in the whole of 2011

To put that in perspective, that's just under ten times the amount generated by the whole of digital recorded music in 2011 ($5.2bn) according to yesterday's IFPI estimates.

The results, for the three months to December 31, compare to revenue of $26.74 billion and net quarterly profit of $6 billion, or $6.43 per diluted share, in Apple's Q1 2011.

Gross margin was 44.7 percent compared to 38.5% in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 58% of the quarter's revenue.
