CRT CLSSX (pronounced Crate Classics) is the new project from producer Jamie Rodigan and singer-songwriter Aaron Horn. Born to the legendary David Rodigan and Trevor Horn, the duo create forward thinking electronic music, blurring the genre lines between Dancehall, Jungle and Trap. Their debut single “Habits” has just been picked by Mixmag as their “9 Breaks Releases You Need To Hear This Month” and now receives a new version on the hands of the vibrant UK underground 5-piece, Afriquoi which we are able to premiere today.
Afriquoi's take on CRT CLSSX's Habits is a frenetic affair pulsing along at around 160 beats per minute. Tastefully lo-fi samples of group singing and clapping from a ceremony in Benin - Africa open the track before dropping us madly into a whirlwind drum circle of 808 snare and percussion sounds. The dancehall pace is broken in half by some good old 90s electronica work, as if we were being treated to a carefully nostalgic UK garage track, but, this time, somewhere in a hut in a far-off jungle.
Aaron and Jamie have both enjoyed commercial and critical success individually. Career highlights already include hitting the number 1 spot in the UK Singles Chart selling over a million records with previous project Sam and the Womp as well as supporting the likes of MIA, touring with Mark Ronson, Disclosure, supporting Elton John, Beardyman, Mr Vegas, Julian Marley, Super Cat and Baby Cham amongst others.
Drawing on so many influences, CRT CLSSX’s music is jam-packed with organic sounds and complex rhythms generally developed by veteran producers. "The project came about through a shared love for Dancehall and Bass. We took some of those key elements and built a vibe in the studio over the course of a few months. It’s pop and dancehall merging into blissful island rhythms” explain the duo.
