Our latest music biz Rising Star is Misha Clarke, publicist at We Care A Lot PR. Here, she tells her story...
How did you break into the industry?
At university, we had to do an internship for three to six months as part of our course. I lucked out and got one working with Niki Sanderson at Nonstop PR a few years ago, which was fantastic and really opened my eyes to what roles there were in the media that I hadn’t known about previously. When I graduated, I applied for an internship role doing online press at Caroline International, which was an incredible experience and taught me so much.
What is your proudest achievement so far?
Breaking into the industry. It feels great to go to a job I enjoy in an environment I feel comfortable in. I get to work with great people and learn every single day. Working at We Care A Lot PR has enabled me to see and learn how massive press campaigns are worked and come together.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?
Proceeding with the end goal in mind despite hearing ‘no’ so many times when trying to achieve what I want.
Why is a great press campaign still a valuable thing?
It tells a story, it allows people to get excited about what’s coming and builds anticipation. With the sheer volume of music available now, a great press campaign enables people to invest in something beyond the end product. My current role has been a definite baptism of fire, a real in-at-the-deep-end experience. My boss Louise Mayne is amazing, and her support and encouragement have allowed me to develop. The roster is so diverse and has allowed me to assist on some amazing press campaigns, from Marilyn Manson and Lil Peep, to Jay-Z and Lorde. It’s been an incredible learning curve. I have also put together successful campaigns for artists I really enjoy working with and believe in, such as Ryan Beatty, Astroid Boys, Louis III and most recently online press for Virgin EMI’s cool new pop signing Four Of Diamonds.
What’s your dream job?
One that allows me to travel more and work with creative and inspiring people. I already experience a lot of what I would have wanted in a dream job working at We Care A Lot PR so I’m halfway, if not more, already!
Tell us a secret about the music business...
Every single day something happens to make me laugh.
