Primetime music reportedly returning to BBC TV, as Fulwell 73 plan new show

Primetime music television is to return to the BBC later this year, according to reports in The Sun.

Fulwell 73, the production team behind James Corden’s Late Late Show and Carpool Karaoke, is reportedly launching a six-part series on BBC1 in the autumn as a trial run.

There will be a different celebrity hosting each episode alongside a regular presenter, with music stars set to perform and take part in comedy skits.

The show would be the first regular primetime music programme to air on the BBC since Top Of The Pops was axed in 2006.

The paper quotes a source as saying: “A TV source said: “The BBC has been desperate for a music show for a modern-day audience. Bosses know they can’t simply get away with showing musicians perform their latest tracks, there needs to be a social media element with the scope to create virals, like The Late Late Show and Jimmy Fallon do in the us.”

The as yet-untitled series will have Fulwell 73’s Gabe Turner and former TFI Friday producer Suzi Aplin as executive producers.

Run by Ben Winston, Ben Turner, Gabe Turner and Leo Pearlman, alongside Corden, Fulwell 73 have produced award-winning documentaries (The Class Of ’92, I Am Bolt), concert films (Robbie Williams: One Night At The Palladium, One Direction: Where We Are) and feature films (White Island, Piggy). 

Its 2017 projects include The Story Of Motown, which is being produced alongside Universal’s relaunched Polygram company, and a Bros documentary.  

In November 2016, Pearlman hinted at Fulwell’s plans in an interview with Music Week.

“[If Top of the Pops was on now] it would have moments that would have ended up having 20 million views over the course of a few weeks,” he said. ”Whether it’s a live music show or not, whether it’s performances or not, I just think there’s something amazing to do in that space. But a channel’s got to say, Go and do it.

“There’s nothing aimed at that weekend audience, nothing contemporary and relevant. There should be a show like that and we’d love to be the ones to make it.”
