Tastemakers: What's BBC Radio 1Xtra's Jamz Supernova listening to this week?

BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ Jamz Supernova on Hak Baker’s Misfits EP

I have so many artists to thank for my musical existence, people like Frank Ocean, Kelela and James Blake, to name just a few.

They flipped the status quo, taking traditional sounds and pushing them into the unknown. They transcend genres and are praised for their uniqueness. They allowed for me to create a radio show to celebrate the alternative.

The scene is flourishing but, with such powerful figureheads, new artists can end up souding like those mentioned.

Therefore, whenever I hear something genuinely different, even if it is challenging, my ears naturally prick up and I feel excited.

I felt it when I heard Hak Baker. I was asked to play his record first on my BBC Radio 1Xtra show, as his team felt it was the best place to start his journey on radio. I listened and decided to go for it!

So who is Hak Baker? He’s a self-taught guitarist, songwriter and singer from East London, and he definitely doesn’t look how he sounds.

And how to define his sound? The best description, I guess, is future-folk, and even that’s a bit ‘meh’. It just doesn’t do it justice!

Baker sings for the unheard, he’s here for the misfits. And it’s been amazing hearing him grow with each recording.

His debut EP Misfits is 100% worth a listen. Is it for everyone? No, but why would you want him to be?
