Laverne (pictured above with her 6 Music team and Jo Whiley) scooped the award for Best Radio Show at last night’s ceremony, which saw a record attendance at the show’s brand new venue, Battersea Evolution.
“This is fabulous and it’s wonderful to be here in a room with all my friends and rivals – what a thrill,” said Laverne, who took to the stage and quickly thanked her production team.
“I want to say thank you to all of the women who did my job before I did it, including Jo Whiley my amazing friend,” said Laverne.
We need more in our amazing gang
The BBC Radio 6 Music presenter and former Music Week cover star, who moved to the Breakfast Show earlier this year, used the remainder of her speech to send a message to those who will follow in her wake.
“There still aren’t many of us in radio, there aren’t enough of us, and I want to say anybody out there that’s a young girl that wants to do the job that we do, keep coming, we need more of us – we need more in our amazing gang,” Laverne said.
“I’m so proud to be part of my tribe, we want you to join us. Come and take the jobs and start working in the radio – it’s the best in the world.”
