Polydor gets off to a strong start with Olivia Rodrigo campaign as Drop Dead debuts at No.1

Olivia Rodrigo has landed her fourth No.1 single with Drop Dead.

The lead single from Rodrigo’s upcoming third album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love (out June 12), is her second track to debut at the summit following 2021 smash Drivers License

Good 4 U reached the summit in its second chart week that same year, while 2023 single Vampire had to wait until its ninth week to reach the top.

As reported in Alan Jones’ charts analysis, Rodrigo’s overall singles consumption in the UK stands at 23,608,224 units, including top tallies of 2,962,007 from Good 4 U, 2,552,447 from Drivers License and 1,800,044 from Vampire.

New single Drop Dead debuted at No.1 with opening consumption of 65,435 units (Official Charts Company). It was the most streamed track of the past week with 6,735,624 streams.

Drop Dead is Olivia Rodrigo's ninth UK Top 10 single in the past five years. It has also debuted at No.1 in Australia and Ireland.

It means an end to the second No.1 run of five consecutive weeks (eight in total) for Rein Me In by fellow Polydor Label Group acts Sam Fender and Olivia Dean. The Universal Music Group UK label group has now occupied the top spot for nine out of 17 weeks so far this year.

Jodie Cammidge, managing director at Polydor Label Group, said: “Massive congratulations to Olivia on such an incredible launch with Drop Dead, and a big thank you to our partners at Geffen/Interscope in the US.  The UK has always been hugely important to Olivia, so it’s extra special to see the new track debut at No.1 here, right where it belongs. With such an exciting year ahead, we couldn’t have asked for a stronger start.”

Rodrigo has also been part of a collective chart presence this year on the compilations rundown with the Help(2) charity project.

You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love was recorded with producer Daniel Nigro, who also worked with Rodrigo on her previous records.

The success of Drop Dead has boosted consumption of Rodrigo’s first two albums, although both have already become chart mainstays with a combined 391 weeks inside the Top 40.

Debut LP Sour had a consumption increase of 18.4% week-on-week as as it climbed two places to No.23 (4,606 units), while follow-up Guts also moved up two spots at No.21 (increasing 21.1% week-on-week to 4,872 units).

Rodrigo closed Glastonbury on the Pyramid Stage last summer, which also delivered chart boosts for both albums at the time.

Sour has UK consumption to date of 1,310,185 units, while Guts is on 755,470 units.
