Sulinna Ong upped to Spotify UK head of music

Sulinna Ong has ascended to the position of Spotify’s head of music, UK and Ireland, just months after she joined the streaming giant.

Music Week revealed in April how she had been poached by Spotify from Deezer to take up the role of head of artist and label services. She was replaced at Deezer by Nigel Harding.

She will now add responsibility for the music culture and editorial teams. The appointment follows the departure of Austin Daboh, who’s expected to confirm a move to Apple Music.

Ong said: “I’m delighted to be taking on a new role as UK Head of Music for Spotify – and looking forward to bringing all our music teams together to deliver even greater experiences for all our partners, labels, artists and, of course, our listeners.”

Tom Connaughton, Spotify’s UK MD, said: “The close collaboration between our UK Music teams leads to great experiences for artists, labels, users and our people – and we’re always looking for new ways to work even more closely together. Sulinna joined us three months ago and in that time has shown great leadership, bringing 16 years’ experience pioneering global marketing strategies in the music industry, leading editorial teams as well as directly managing major artists.”

Ong was also vocal on Deezer’s industry-wide campaign to switch to user-centric payments.

She has 16 years’ experience of working on marketing strategies in the music industry, as well as directly managing artists including Kasabian and Fun Lovin’ Criminals.

Ong has also had spells of working in tech on marketing software, AI and robotics products. Ong’s previous employers include Sony Electronics, SonyBMG, and WholeWorldBand.
