Oscar-nominated composer George Fenton passes aged 76

Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning British film, television, and theatre composer George Fenton has died aged 76.

Fenton composed scores for over 100 feature films alongside numerous television dramas, documentaries and stage productions in a career spanning more than five decades. 

‘We are sad to announce that George Fenton passed away unexpectedly today," said a statement from CMG management. "He is survived by his loving wife Amanda, ex-wife Jane, children Gemma, Grace and Bridget, and grandchildren Lola, Audrey, Alfred, George, Frank, Beatrice and a life of music."

A five-time Academy Award nominee, Fenton received numerous BAFTA, Emmy, Ivor Novello and BMI Awards in addition to a Classic BRIT Award. In 2023, he was awarded a CBE for services to music.

Fenton was renowned for his long-standing collaborations with Sir Richard Attenborough, scoring films including Gandhi, Cry Freedom, Shadowlands and The Madness of King George. His other film credits included Groundhog Day, Dangerous Liaisons, Ever After, The Fisher King, The Lady In The Van and 18 Ken Loach films.

Alongside his film work, Fenton also composed television scores including The Jewel In The Crown, Bergerac and Alan Bennett's Talking Heads. He also composed the music for David Attenborough's natural history series, including The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Frozen Planet, Life and Wild Isles.

Last month, Peermusic signed Fenton to Peermusic Accorder for a worldwide publishing deal via his company Shogun Music.
