Soundplate acquires AI mastering firm Stemmer

Soundplate has acquired AI-powered music mastering business Stemmer following a long-standing partnership between the two companies.

Founded in 2020 by music producer Sam Goetz, Stemmer provides AI mastering services for more than 20 music platforms and websites. As part of the acquisition, Soundplate has brought Stemmer’s core audio algorithms in-house and rebuilt the technology as a proprietary, serverless mastering API.

Soundplate says its engineering team extracted Stemmer’s core algorithms and used them as the foundation for the new infrastructure, which was built from the ground up. The technology now powers the company’s consumer-facing mastering tools, including its redesigned Online Mastering service, a dedicated mastering engine for vinyl releases and its recently launched AI Stem Splitter.

"Stemmer have been a brilliant partner for many years," said Soundplate founder Matt Benn (pictured). "With our mastering tools now used by thousands of artists each week, it made strategic sense to acquire the core technology and adapt it to improve every stage of the artist experience. I'm also excited to continue supporting Stemmer's existing white-label partners and B2C customers."

Soundplate will also take on Stemmer’s existing B2B and B2C operations, allowing recording studios, distributors and online platforms that are currently using Stemmer’s infrastructure to continue offering branded mastering services without disruption.

“Matt and his team at Soundplate have been incredible partners that I’ve worked with for several years, and it’s an honour to see our product and business live on through them," said Goetz. "As I move my focus to new ventures, Matt’s stewardship is what Stemmer’s tech, business and artists deserve."

Originally founded as an independent record label, Soundplate has since expanded into a multi-faceted music company supporting independent artists and labels through a range of tools and services, including its free playlist submission platform and marketing platform Soundplate Clicks.
