Spotify celebrates five years of Equal programme with exclusive releases

Spotify has announced a global series of five exclusive new Spotify Singles to mark five years of its Equal programme.

Launched on International Women’s Day 2021, the Equal platform is a global commitment by the DSP that aims to foster equity for women working in audio.

The limited Spotify Singles collection brings together five women artists from across Europe, North America and Africa, who have each reimagined an iconic track by a woman who has inspired their own creative journey.

Recorded exclusively for the streaming platform, the five new releases are: Namasenda (Sweden) – Lucky by Britney Spears; Badmómzjay (Germany) – Rehab by Rihanna; MARO (Portugal) – Sauvignon Blanc by Rosalía; Willow Avalon (US) – You’re So Vain by Carly Simon; and (pictured) Shekhinah (South Africa) – I Love Music by Lebo Mathosa.

"Equal reflects Spotify's ongoing commitment to helping more women artists have opportunities to be discovered, celebrated and heard around the world,” said Bel Aztiria, global music programme lead at Spotify. “Over the past five years, we've had the privilege of celebrating incredible artists through the programme, including Equal ambassadors such as Tyla, Lola Young, Jorja Smith and Halsey, alongside thousands of women artists from markets around the world."

Aztiria continued: "The new Spotify Singles collection is a fitting way to mark Equal's five-year anniversary, bringing together artists from Europe, North America and Africa to honour the women whose music has inspired them."

“Music has the power to connect cultures, generations and communities, and we're proud to play a role in amplifying exceptional women artists across borders. Our new Spotify Singles celebrate both the artists shaping music today and the trailblazing women who paved the way for them, demonstrating the lasting impact women continue to have on music around the world."

The five Spotify Singles will be supported through Spotify's global Equal playlist, dedicated editorial programming and social channels.

Since launching in 2021, the Equal programme has helped spotlight women artists and creators around the world through editorial support, original content, marketing and global visibility.

Spotify Equal is returning to sponsor the Campaigner category at this year's Women In Music Awards, which will take place on Friday, October 9, at JW Marriott Grosvenor House London.
