Transgressive Records & SJM Management are tipping Girl In The Year Above for “a very bright future”.
The indie label has announced the signing of the Irish/Cornish five-piece, with its leadership team of Toby L, Tim Dellow and Lilas Bourboulon hailing the group as “a truly extraordinary and captivating band”.
“Their songs are at once heartbreaking and euphoric; empathetic and empowering; and always infectious,” said the trio in a joint statement. “It’s been years since we’ve seen a band so adept at writing unifying anthems that move, inspire and rouse in equal measure.”
They added: “They’re youthful visionaries and proper grafters – they’ve been on the road consistently, and every time you see them, it goes up yet another gear. Once we sat down with them for a chat, there was an instant connection. We’ve had the pleasure of hearing upcoming recordings and cannot wait for their debut album, and all that’s to follow.”

The band are working with Conrad Murray, Antony Genn, Simon Moran and Jake Etches at SJM Management.
In another joint statement, the foursome said: “From the very first time we saw Girl In The Year Above perform live, it was obvious they had something extremely special: wonderful songs, incredible chemistry and that rare ability to make every show feel like something is happening in the room.”
They added: “Over the last year Jen, Jeanie, David, Shane and Nathan have worked relentlessly on the road and in the studio with producer Ant Genn. They've taken every opportunity that’s come their way and grown at an extraordinary pace.”
The team at SJM described Transgressive as “the perfect home for the band”.

The band commented: “What the hell - how did we swindle that? We feel very, very lucky - Transgressive feels like a family already.”
A new single, Wet Paint, is out now as their first for Transgressive.
“The song’s story starts lightly to draw the listener in until you gradually realise it is about consent,” said the band. “With a heavy topic it was important to us that the track still felt bright and powerful. We hope it mimics the likeness of anyone who can relate to the track - in the sense that you are bright and powerful no matter what. We would love for this track to bring joy and defiance.”
Girl In The Year Above’s previous releases include a cover of Massive Attack’s Teardrop, which featured on the Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man soundtrack. They are touring the UK and Ireland in October.
