KOKO has appointed Alexandria Carr as its new head of music.
Carr previously served as contemporary music programmer at the Southbank Centre, and has a remit to “maximise the potential” of the Camden venue, which now operates a members’ club as part of its offering.
“This is a role that I am immensely excited for,” Carr said. “The work that has been done over the last five years is nothing short of exemplary and I am aware that I am being handed the baton to one of London's most iconic venues, in a year where KOKO celebrates its 125th birthday – an incredible privilege!”
Namechecking the likes of Dua Lipa, Stormzy, Central Cee, Liam Gallagher, Burna Boy, Take That and Coldplay, Carr described KOKO as “an important part of the artist’s live journey, from the early stages, through to arena level acts that return because it’s so special”.
“My vision is to build upon this, making sure that the artists really understand what they can do at KOKO beyond the traditional live show,” she said.

“The building is set up to support the artist’s creativity across multiple spaces backstage allowing them to create many different experiences, plus the added layer of being able to create and distribute new IP,” Carr added. “It’s a very exciting time for artists and KOKO is perfectly placed to support them, with a completely unique proposition.”

Now three months into the role, Carr booked Erykah Badu for a surprise DJ set, co-curated the music for KOKO's recent Chanel collaboration and delivered a free-to-access day festival in partnership with Jazz Re:freshed.

Carr founded Amplify Sounds in 2020 and has also worked at Birmingham's Town Hall and Symphony Hall.
Alongside her role at KOKO, Carr continues to programme for Cheltenham Jazz Festival and sits on the board of the European Jazz Network. She is also a trustee and talent development advisor for UK folk organisation Sound Roots.
