The O2 has reached its highest sustainability rating to date, receiving a Highly Commended certification in A Greener Future’s (AGF) Greener Arena programme.
The AEG-owned and operated London venue has risen two tiers since first entering the programme in 2022, and says it has cut carbon emissions by 27% per show and 26% per fan over that period.
Measures have included energy efficiency upgrades by its facilities team, a renewable electricity power purchase agreement (PPA) with Ecotricity, a switch to electric on-site vehicles, and a 31.5% reduction in food service emissions since 2019.
The venue, which celebrates its 20th anniversary next year, has also increased its recycling and composting rate by 15% in 2026, which it attributes to closer collaboration with on-site tenants, enhanced waste segregation practices and a reduction in overall waste streams.
Sustainability is embedded into how we operate as a venue

"Achieving a Highly Commended Greener Arena Certification is a fantastic milestone for The O2 and reflects years of commitment, innovation and collaboration across the business," said Sam Booth, director of sustainability at AEG International. "Sustainability is embedded into how we operate as a venue, and this recognition demonstrates the progress the team have made in reducing our environmental impact while continuing to deliver world-class live entertainment for millions of visitors every year.
"We've come a long way since beginning this journey in 2022, and while we're proud of what has been achieved, we're equally focused on continuing to drive progress and finding new ways to reduce emissions, minimise waste and support a more sustainable future for the live events industry."
An independent not-for-profit organisation, AGF assesses festivals, venues and events against a range of environmental and social sustainability criteria, including energy use, waste management, travel, food and beverage operations, procurement and community engagement.
"When an iconic venue like The O2 strives for excellence in sustainability, the impact ripples throughout the sector," said AGF CEO & co-founder Claire O’Neill. "We're really happy to see The O2 achieve "Highly Commended" in the Greener Arena Certification, showing continuous improvements and an unwavering commitment to protect the environment, to care for their staff and visitors, and to be good neighbours in their community. Congratulations to the whole team."
