Songs of the summer: How YouTube, OCC and Spotify ranked 2019's biggest hits

What was the biggest hit in the UK this summer?

Based on Official Charts Company data from early June up to last week, that would be I Don’t Care by Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber (1,021,384 total sales).

But the track is easily beaten in the YouTube Songs Of The Summer, where Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road (feat. Billy Ray Cyrus) is on top with 41.5m views in the UK (its ranked No.2 by the OCC). According to YouTube, I Don’t Care is on 21.8m views for the period June 1 to August 15, behind No.2 song Senorita by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello.

Senorita is also No.2 on Spotify’s UK rankings (June 1 to August 20), in which I Don’t Care is on top. The British Spotify chart also sees strong support for Lewis Capaldi’s Someone You Loved at No.3, the same position as the OCC summer rundown (it makes No.4 on YouTube with 20m views).

Despite the huge UK success of Billie Eilish, she’s actually lagging in the UK with Bad Guy. The single is No.5 overall on OCC sales of 474,993, No.6 on Spotify’s rankings and No.6 on YouTube. Globally, however, Bad Guy is No.3 on Spotify behind I Don’t Care. Senorita is top of the pile around the world, according to the streaming giant.

In terms of domestic artists, YouTube has five in its UK Top 10, compared with six on Spotify and the OCC. But YouTube does well with UK rappers including Dave (Location feat. Burna Boy at No.7) and Mist with So High (feat. Fredo) at No.8 – neither of them makes the OCC or Spotify Top 10 for the summer.

Stormzy is a fairly consistent performer with Vossi Bop, though, which makes No 6 (OCC), No.5 (YouTube) and No.4 (Spotify).

Perhaps the biggest winner of the summer is Lewis Capaldi, with Someone You Loved and Hold Me While You Wait both making the summer UK Top 10 on YouTube, Spotify and OCC singles.
