Primary Wave hires Anthem's 'formidable' David Weitzman to drive catalogue acquisitions

Primary Wave has hired David Weitzman to drive further acquisitions at the publisher.

Weitzman joins Primary Wave as partner from Anthem Entertainment Group, which recently rebranded from Ole. He will focus on the acquisition of iconic catalogues for the Primary Wave Music IP Fund 2.

Primary Wave has made a big splash with its Whitney Houston Estate partnership.

Weitzman will be based out of the company's Los Angeles office and will work closely with founder and CEO, Lawrence Mestel, as well as president, Justin Shukat.

He said: "I am thrilled to announce this new chapter in my professional career joining Larry, Justin and the fantastic Primary Wave team as partner sourcing acquisitions to enhance the company's aggressive growth strategy."

"I have known David for quite some time. He had been a formidable opponent when at his former company,” said Mestel. "We couldn't be happier to provide David a platform where his vast experience and talents can flourish."

Weitzman began his music business career in the ’90s, working with record labels such as Rick Rubin's American Recordings, Epitaph Records, Sublime's Skunk Records and Red Ant Records. He worked in the A&R and radio promotion capacities with artists including Sublime, Rancid, The Black Crowes, Sir Mix A Lot, Ozzy Osbourne and Love & Rockets.

He transitioned to digital distributor eMusic during the late '90s, where he signed up independent labels and artists to exclusive digital distribution deals.

He later worked on music supervising audiovisual projects including MTV hits, Jackass, Wildboyz, Rob & Big and Run's House.

At Ole, Weitzman signed super producer Timbaland for catalogue and future works, led the acquisition of Sony Pictures Entertainment's music publishing assets and acquired RedOne's 2101 Songs catalogue.
