BMG and Suno announce global AI music alliance

BMG and AI music creation platform Suno have announced a global alliance covering BMG’s recorded music and publishing repertoire.

According to the companies, the deal ensures that BMG artists and songwriters who choose to participate will have their rights protected and be compensated for their music, while also settling prior use of BMG recordings and publishing works.

The agreement is part of Suno's upcoming launch of its first music model developed in partnership with the music industry.

Together, Suno and BMG say they will develop "entirely new music experiences that reimagine how artists and fans can connect".

The deal sees BMG become the latest significant player to strike a deal with Suno following Warner Music Group's licensing agreement with the company last November.

This agreement establishes strong protections, clear economics and new creative possibilities for artists and their fans

Celine Joshua, BMG

Celine Joshua, EVP, global marketing & streaming, BMG, said: “The future of AI in music will be defined by whether artists and songwriters remain at the centre of the opportunity and share in the value it creates. Choice is the guiding principle.

"This agreement establishes strong protections, clear economics and new creative possibilities for artists and their fans. As we enter the era of creation, we look forward to shaping that future together with our creators and Suno.”

Suno still faces legal action in the US from major music companies including Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. Warner settled its litigation last year.

Last month, Suno was also hit with a copyright infringement ruling in Germany following legal action by GEMA.

Together with BMG, we can develop new experiences that give artists and songwriters real choice, generate new revenue, and make music a bigger part of people’s lives

Mikey Shulman, Suno

Mikey Shulman, Suno co-founder and CEO, said: “We believe the future of music will be more participatory, creating entirely new ways for artists and fans to connect. Building that future responsibly means working directly with the people who make music and the companies that represent them.

"Together with BMG, we can develop new experiences that give artists and songwriters real choice, generate new revenue, and make music a bigger part of people’s lives.”

Last week, Suno published its updated principles for "building the future of music responsibly". In a blog post, it revealed that it plans to roll out new watermarking and fingerprinting tools and updated community guidelines.

The announcement coincided with Suno becoming the first customer to adopt Musixmatch's Sentinel, a real-time copyright detection service.
