Deezer recruits Arlo Parks, Fontaines DC, Dream Wife and more for InVersions covers album

Deezer has teamed with indie acts for the streaming service’s own covers album, InVersions.

Ten acts from around the world have reimagined popular hits in their own alternative style. The compilation is available exclusively from today as a Deezer Originals release.

InVersions features indie and alternative acts crossimg genre and style boundaries. Former Music Week cover star Arlo Parks performs her first ever song in French (Angèle’s Ta Reine). The stripped-back rendition is in contrast to the faster-paced original. Fontaines DC bring some indie grit to their deconstruction of Wouldn’t It Be Nice by The Beach Boys.

New Zealand’s Benee transforms Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black with a slow and mellow vibe. Meanwhile. Gus Dapperton provides a fresh interpretation of Bruce Springteen’s I’m On Fire.

All artists recorded their covers during the pandemic. While Deezer chose each InVersion act, each of them selected their own songs to cover.

“It’s been a tough time for musicians, but especially indie artists that rely on live gigs,” said Nigel Harding, Deezer’s VP of global artist marketing. “InVersions helps champion exciting new indie artists when they need it most, giving them a different way to grow their audience. We made sure that everyone had the creative freedom to choose a song and reimagine it in their own style. I hope Indie fans from all over the world discover some new favourites among these incredibly talented artists.”

“I picked Ta Reine by Angèle because I find her voice completely mesmerising and soft, and I feel like the topic the song discusses is very important,” said Arlo Parks. “I’ve always wanted to sing in French since my mum is French and I’m generally just enthralled by this song and her delivery. I hope I can do it justice.”

Fontaines DC said: “Covering a Beach Boys song has always been a scary thing considering the genius arrangements, their playing, their harmonies, everything about it. But it was always something quite intriguing and especially when we thought about it from the point of view of subverting the lightheartedness that they conveyed most of the time. So for Wouldn’t It Be Nice, we saw this kind of naive perspective towards love and marriage in the lyrics, and we were quite curious to see what would happen when you contrasted that approach with a darker musical palette. What came out of it is something that kind of reminds us a bit of The Jesus and Mary Chain and Rowland S Howard.”
